Motor Cortex

Area at the rear of the frontal lobes that controls voluntary movements.

Temporal Lobes

Portion of the cerebral cortex lying near the ears, responsible for interpreting auditory information.

Occipital Lobes

Portion of the cerebral cortex at the back of the head; includes the visual areas, which receive visual information from the opposite visual field.

Frontal Lobes

Portion of the cerebral cortex behind the forehead; involved in speaking & muscle movements & in making plans & judgements.

Hypothalamus

1) Directs maintenance activities (eating, drinking, body temperature),

2) Linked to emotion

3) Helps govern the endocrine system via the pituitary gland.

Amygdala

 Two almond-shaped neural clusters that are components of the limbic system & are linked to emotion.

Cerebellum

AKA the "little brain" attached to the rear of the brainstem; helps coordinate voluntary movement & balance.

Thalamus

Brain's sensory switchboard, located on top of the brainstem. Directs messages to the sensory receiving areas in the cortex & transmits replies to the cerebellum & medulla.
